I'm much more interested in the intersection of tactical RPG and emergent narrative game that they're aiming for than I am in conscious stat-juggling. That, and the notion of characters being forms in turns by conscious decisions (pet the critter, touch the flame, choose an upgrade path) and by lucky or unlucky accident (getting maimed or falling into or out of relationships, as well as various story beats) seems to be central to the storytelling ethos at play here. It isn't until a few battles into the game that your characters really "become" heroes.
